Paul McMenamin
Paul McMenamin is Professor in the School of Anatomy and Human Biology and Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning) in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, the University of Western Australia.
He has extensive experience in teaching clinical and surgical anatomy to undergraduate medical students and a range of postgraduate specialists especially in the areas of gynaecology and ophthalmology. He has been the recipient of several teaching awards which are likely a reflection of the use of humour in teaching and
using a range of alternative approaches in the
teaching
of anatomy, including model building and body painting.
Prof McMenamin is an internationally recognized expert in eye anatomy and disease with over 28 years of experience. He is author of around 100 scientific publications including a major textbook and has a personal interest in art.
It was his personal interest in greyhounds, as a hobby owner, trainer and breeder for 15 years that led to him identifying the need for some form of high quality accurate anatomical teaching aid for the veterinary industry and dog training fraternity. ‘Anatomy of the Greyhound’ wall chart is the result of over 18 months of careful dissection, photography and illustrative documentation of canine anatomy. The chart was specifically designed as a teaching aid for trainers wishing to avoid and treat racing injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Dr John Kohnke, then with ‘Vetsearch International’, upon hearing of Professor McMenamin’s project encouraged him to complete the chart and make it commercially available. His advice and experience in the racing industry was invaluable in the creation of the charts.
The instant success of the dog chart encouraged Paul to immediately commence work on a similar chart of the horse musculoskeletal anatomy. The ‘Anatomy of the Horse’ chart has proven very successful with thoroughbred and trotting trainers as well as amateur horse owners, veterinary practitioners and students.
Prof McMenamin has also produced a series of medical anatomy charts which are used extensively in teaching. These charts will be available to purchase on line in the coming months.
Associate Professor Ken Richardson
Dr Richardson has taught at the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Murdoch University, one of the most highly respected veterinary schools in Australia. Dr Richardson was a critical advisor and contributor to the content of the horse chart. Many of the dissections which the illustrations depict were prepared under his guidance. His intimate knowledge of equine anatomy was invaluable in the creation of the chart and in ensuring its accuracy and originality.
Dr John Kohnke
Dr Kohnke was Technical Director for ‘Vetsearch International’ at the time of the creation of the horse and dog anatomy charts. He is recognized worldwide for his research and publications on nutrition and management of the performance animal, including the horse and greyhound. His expertise in injuries was invaluable in helping decide on which aspects of anatomy of the greyhound and horse were most relevant to trainers. Dr Kohnke currently has his own company ‘Kohnke’s own specializing in nutritional aids for horses. http://www.kohnkesown.com
